Hawker man found with $70,000 worth of heroin

Police seized about $70,000 worth of heroin in Canberra’s north.

A HAWKER man has been arrested after he was found with about $70,000 worth of heroin yesterday (March 1).

The 47-year-old was charged with five counts of trafficking a controlled drug other than cannabis following a search of a residence, where police located 150g of heroin.

His arrest comes almost six months after police began investigating heroin supply in a response to an increase in drug overdose deaths in Canberra.

Following extensive inquiries, detectives identified an organised criminal network involved in supplying heroin across north Canberra.

ACT policing detective acting superintendent Matthew Reynolds says this arrest reduces the risk to the community through the arrest of a person directly involved in the supply of heroin in Canberra.

“It will also reduce the impact on ACT government resources, which have responded to and investigated the deaths of several people caused by the heroin supplied by the man arrested,” he says.

The Hawker man will face charges at the ACT Magistrate’s Court.

Police urge anyone who may have any information about illicit drugs to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.
