Improving Sydney to Canberra rail link becomes a priority

INFRASTRUCTURE Australia has listed an improved Sydney to Canberra rail link on its infrastructure priority list released today (February 26).

ACT Transport Minister Chris Steel has welcomed the announcement saying investment in this link will not only make train travel a faster and more appealing option for Canberrans travelling to and from Sydney, but it will also provide better connections with regional towns.

“It’s time for the Federal Government to get on board with faster rail, and take this infrastructure investment proposal seriously,” he says.

But it’s not all good news, and Mr Steel says he is disappointed that Infrastructure Australia didn’t include the ACT government’s bid for improvements to Parkes Way and Fairbairn Avenue as part of the ACT East-West Regional Freight Network.

“We are disappointed that Infrastructure Australia have not included this major corridor on the infrastructure priority list as upgrading Parkes Way in particular would significantly help reduce congestion throughout the city as well as along the East-West route,” he says.

“However, we hope that continued planning will see this upgrade to this Federally owned road recognised as one of both regional and national significance.”

What is good news, according to Mr Steel, is that a priority initiative on the list is improvements to Canberra’s public transport network, specifically the development of transit corridors connecting Belconnen and Queanbeyan to central Canberra.

Infrastructure Australia has also identified 16 initiatives for national infrastructure programs including waste and recycling, water, road network safety and Indigenous art and cultural facilities.

There is no need for spending a fortune on the rail link as Murray’s buses already provide a superb frequent and cheap service.
