Knife-wielding Calwell offender strikes after dark

A KNIFE-wielding man has lunged at, and stabbed, multiple people on the streets of Calwell over the past week.

Police are urging Calwell residents to be aware of their surroundings after he was first reportedly seen on Saturday (June 6) night.

He approached a man at about 9.40pm and demanded his phone. He then lunged at the man with a knife before running away. The victim suffered a small wound to his hand.

Then, last night (June 9) he approached three people while carrying a knife.

First, at about 5pm, he approached a man, asking a question, before lunging at him with the knife. The man received minor injuries to his hand and neck.

Half an hour later, the offender approached a woman who was walking near an underpass beneath Johnson Drive. The woman ran in the opposite direction when she saw the man with the knife. She is uninjured.

At about 7.30pm he approached a man near Beazley Crescent, Calwell. He lunged at the man and stabbed him in the back. The victim was transported to the Canberra Hospital in a stable condition.

Police believe these incidents are all linked and likely to have been the result of actions by one person. As the incidents all occurred at night, descriptions of the wanted man have varied. The consistent information is that the man is in his 20s or 30s and has dark hair.

Residents in the Calwell area are urged to be aware of their surroundings when out walking and to report any suspicious activity immediately to police on 131 444. Anyone with information about these incidents (including CCTV that captures the man) should call Crimestoppers on 1800 333000 or via crimestoppers.com.au quoting reference number 6550531.
