L-plater busted after mum encourages driver to overtake

Police were baffled to hear that the driver’s mum had said “to overtake the other cars because they were driving dangerously”.

AN L-plater has been caught driving 18km/h over the speed limit after the driver’s mum encouraged the learner to overtake motorists that were “driving dangerously” on Adelaide Avenue.

The L-plater was detected driving 98km/h in the 80km/h zone on Saturday and when police asked why the driver was exceeding the speed limit, when there was a supervising driver in the car, road policing detective sergeant Ivan Naspe was baffled to hear the driver’s mum had said “to overtake the other cars because they were driving dangerously”.

“There is simply no situation that warrants speeding. It endangers not only your life but those around you,” detective sergeant Naspe says.

“I hope our interaction with the learner driver taught a more valuable lesson – that is follow the road rules and always obey the speed limit.”

The learner driver was fined $438 and lost three demerit points.

The L-plater was one of 55 drivers caught speeding over the weekend. Offences included a 25-year-old man from Kaleen who was clocked doing 135km/h along an 80km/h stretch of Gungahlin Drive. He received a $1841 fine and lost six demerits points.

They also included a 24-year-old Gilmore man, who is $700 and four demerit points poorer after police stopped his vehicle travelling at 122km/h on an 80km/h section of the Monaro Highway in Hume.
