A PASSION for delivering a professional service and an excellence in law has seen the Woden-based legal firm, KJB Law, recognised at a number of recent community and industry award ceremonies.

“We were thrilled to have received these awards, it feels great to receive this recognition,” says principal Jo Twible, who alongside principal Andrew Freer and principal Des Moore, combined, have 66 years experience at the practice.

At the end of last year, KJB Law was anonymously nominated for, and consequently won, the award for excellence in professional services at the ACT Local Business Awards.

Also a big winner was conveyancing manager Karen Watt, who was awarded Conveyancer of the Year in the annual REIACT awards in September.

“We were delighted,” says practice manager Sue Hayes.

“We try to give our clients the best possible service and look after them well, [which includes] being cost effective.”

From humble beginnings with one solicitor and five support staff in 1978, Sue says KJB Law has a long-established history of excellence in local legal matters.

Sue, who started working at KJB Law in 1980, says the firm is now made up of a strong team of 27 people with 10 well-regarded and highly-experienced solicitors, two conveyancing managers and administration staff that includes paralegals.

Spanning many fields of law such as family law, commercial law, conveyancing and wills and estate planning, Jo says that apart from criminal and administrative law, the team at KJB Law are experienced and ready to help their clients navigate legal issues.

She says that listening to their clients is a big part of their service to clients.  “We are here to help our clients find solutions, and we listen to them to ensure we get to the heart of the matter,” she says.

KJB Law’s family law team, which includes principal Des Moore and associate Philippa Webb, who is currently on maternity leave, has recently expanded to include family law special counsel Kerry White and associate Laura Dowling.

Kerry White – Family Law Special Counsel.

Kerry has been practising law since 1990, and according to Des, is one of the most senior lawyers in family law in Canberra.

Kerry says family law is an ever-evolving part of the law.

“It requires the ability for lawyers to be compassionate to their clients but also professional [and] proactive with advice to help them achieve a practical and time-effective resolution,” she says.

As an accredited family dispute resolution practitioner, Kerry is able to work with both parties to resolve their matter rather than to face the cost, delay and uncertainty of a court hearing.

“I value integrity, professionalism and giving straightforward advice,” she says.

“We support clients by also offering referrals to a network of specialists such as counsellors, superannuation and property valuers to work with the clients to assist their way forward.”

Laura Dowling – Family Law Associate.

The other new member of the team, Laura, attained her law degree in Adelaide and has now been practising law for eight years. She has since completed a masters degree in applied family law.

“The nature of family law is tough but very rewarding,” she says.

“The most important thing is to be empathetic to clients and always be on their side. It is an emotional time for them… I try to make the legal experience for them as pain-free as possible.”

As KJB Law offers a wide range of legal services and specialists in different fields of law, Kerry says clients are able to benefit from being able to seek advice from her colleagues in property, estate or commercial law, too.
