Libs promise to lower car registration costs

Canberra Liberals leader Alistair Coe

A CANBERRA Liberals government will lower the cost of private car registration and will remove after hours parking fees in ACT government parking lots for six months.

They say they will return about $200 a year to Canberra households by lowering the cost of private car registration to NSW levels, through a reduction of exorbitant car registration fees for families.

Since 2012, ACT Labor has increased car registration costs by 40 per cent for about 260,000 ACT passenger vehicles, but under a Canberra Liberals government, a private car owner will save between $84.10 and $98.90, depending on the weight of their vehicles.

“The Liberals’ plan to reduce vehicle registration costs will deliver an immediate benefit to every struggling household that owns a car and to the local economy,” says Canberra Liberals leader Alistair Coe.

Canberra Liberals will also remove after hours parking fees in ACT government parking lots for six months as a COVID stimulus measure to boost the ACT’s night time economy.

This means that after 5.30pm, drivers will have free parking across Canberra, which, they say will encourage more Canberrans to visit entertainment precincts at night to support local businesses.

“We know many Canberrans are doing it tough and are preparing themselves to weather the economic storm from COVID,” Mr Coe says.

“That’s why we’re committed to reducing cost of living pressures, enabling Canberrans to keep more of what they earn. Not only will this return greater confidence to household budgets, but it will serve as a key economic driver to stimulate our COVID economy.”

Same old question… with the Budget already up the creek, where are they going to find the money to offset these losses? Be transparent with what you are proposing to do Libs and you might actually have people seriously consider voting for you.

For pensioners vehicle rego fees are already zero so we have nothing to look forward to, and you have no control over 3rd party insurance, so try again with something sensible.

Jim wake up, wait till you become a pensioner and then I’ll ask you how you feel having your funds whittled away by Govt. I’ve paid my dues over 55 years of taxes etc, so don’t try and shame me.
