GUNGAHLIN’S police station will be expanded and a new emergency services centre will be established by the Canberra Liberals, if they win government this month.
According to the party, police officers and emergency services workers at Gungahlin currently work from a shared facility, with shadow minister for police and emergency services Giulia Jones, saying first respondents at Gungahlin have been forced to work for too long in “small” and “ageing” facilities.
“The existing Gungahlin Joint Emergency Services Centre is used for police, ambulance and firefighting operations, but is so small that it cannot physically fit everyone in at one time,” Ms Jones says.
The party says the new emergency services station will cost about $22.4 million and the upgrade to the police-dedicated facility will cost about $2 million.
“There is little to no capacity for police officers to conduct interviews, no break-out or lunch room, and the toilets are within ear-shot of the rest of the team, creating an uncomfortable workplace for staff.”
Earlier this week the Canberra Liberals promised 130 new police recruits and 100 more fire-fighters. The party says they will put $55 million for 130 more police and $45 million for 100 more firies.
