Man tries to escape cops in Molonglo River

A MAN ran into Molonglo River this morning (October 16) to avoid being arrested by police.

Soon after, the Karabar man, 28, left the water and was taken to hospital for assessment.

Before his attempted escape into the river, the man was driving a Ford Falcon in Holt, at about 12.30am, at the intersection of Kingsford Smith Drive and Southern Cross Drive, when police tried to stop him.

He didn’t stop, so police chased him along Southern Cross Drive and later Coulter Drive, where the driver made attempts to ram a police motorcycle.

On both occasions police determined it was unsafe to continue a pursuit.

At about 12.50am the vehicle was located on Parkes Way near the Glenloch Interchange after it collided with a guard rail.

It was then that the driver ran into the Molonglo River.

He has been charged with multiple driving offences including two counts of failing to stop for police, aggravated driving, two counts of driving at police, driving while suspended and two counts of breaching a good behaviour bond. He will face charges at the ACT Magistrates Court.

Police are continuing investigations into some property located inside the vehicle.
