Metal ‘legends’ to play limited-capacity gig

CANBERRA Theatre Centre will open the doors for its first ticketed event since its closure in March, with a strictly limited-capacity gig opening with performances by metal legends and pioneers of Australian doom metal, Pod People, sludge rock duo Lucifungus and grindcore band Wretch. CANBERRA’S legendary Guitar Trek, led by Tim Kain, has just released a new album, “Bluetongue”, on the Naxos label, featuring all-Aussie works for guitar. Kain has been working with producer Norbert Kraft in St Paul’s Church Newmarket, Canada, just outside of Toronto. Purchase here.

FURTHER to our recent news that playwright Dylan Van Den Berg had won the Griffin Award, The Street Theatre has announced a work-in-progress online showing of his play “Milk” at 5pm on Friday, August 7, directed by Gin Savage. Spanning two centuries, the play tracks a conversation between three Aboriginal ancestors stranded together on a metaphysical Flinders Island off the coast of Tasmania. Limited places, book here.

TUGGERANONG Arts Centre has a new multi-disciplinary project, “First Response”, in which artists Martin Ollman, Marissa McDowell, Anna Georgia and Shannon Hanrahan use photography, video, film, drawing and dance to document Canberra’s role in responding to the COVID-19 crisis and the effect on individuals and communities. At Tuggeranong Arts Centre, July 28-September 19.

CANBERRA’S Art in Miniature (AIM) painting group is travelling south to Cooma to exhibit miniature art works, an art form that has existed since the 8th century. Founded in 2001, this is AIM’s 20th exhibition. The tiny, jewel-like art works depict everything from the landscape to kitchen benches to flora and fauna. Raglan Gallery, 9-11 Lambie Street, Cooma, Wednesday to Sunday, 10.30am-3.30pm, August 5-September 27.

THE 2020-21 Seniors Grant Program and 2020-21 Veterans Grant Program have opened for applications of up to $10,000 that pursue innovative ideas for projects, activities and initiatives that support Canberra seniors. In the previous round, two arts organisations, ArtSound radio and Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centres featured, so it’s time to get thinking. Applications here, close at 5pm, October 30.

YOUNG organ virtuoso, Linus Lee, will be performing music on the Wesley Church organ which was originally composed by JS Bach, Joseph Haydn, Beethoven, Grieg and Lefébure-Wély for other instruments.
