Music for Canberra appoints ‘co-convenors’

IN a new development, Music for Canberra has announced the appointment of
Dr Nicole Hammill and Rachel Gould as artistic co-convenors.

It comes in the wake of several years of instability in the organisation, but with a good match of talents, it looks like a strong team as they prepare for “exciting and innovative music programming” for young musicians.

Dr Hammill comes to Canberra from the Mitchell Conservatorium in Bathurst, where she has been strings coordinator since 2018. A former soloist, concertmaster and principal first violin with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, she has an extensive performance history and three degrees in violin performance, including a doctorate of musical arts from Louisiana State University.

She has also undertaken study in counselling and psychology, and holds a graduate diploma of counselling and a graduate certificate in arts from the University of New England.

By contrast, Gould, a bachelor of music graduate from the ANU School of Music, where she studied clarinet and piano, has worked as production and operations manager at the National Folk Festival, and as production and venue manager for the Canberra International Music Festival.

Propelled by a passion for youth music education, she has also been the ACT outreach officer managing the ACT Musica Viva in Schools program and Masterclass Series, and the artistic director of the Young Music Society’s summer school program.

Speaking as one, they say, “We have exciting new artistic ideas to engage the community at all levels of age, experience and ability to cultivate a sense of belonging through our shared love of music”.
