Nara sister city relationship celebrated

Candles at the Embassy of Japan.

THE 27th anniversary of the Canberra-Nara sister city relationship was officially marked last night (October 15), with a ceremony at the Japanese Embassy.

With more than 1,000 candles illuminating the embassy grounds, the ceremony, hosted by Ambassador for Japan, Reiichiro Takahashi, paid tribute to the origin of the Canberra Nara Candle Festival, normally marked with a traditional candle display in Lennox Gardens, but cancelled this year because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Guests welcomed to the festive garden reception by the ambassador included ACT Commissioner for International Engagement, Brendan Smyth, the chair of the Canberra Nara sister city committee, Narelle Hargreaves and Michael Rabey from the Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin.

Despite the cancellation, the “Itadakimasu”, or Canberra Nara Foodie Weekend, will still take place from October 22–25, complete with a community picnic planned in Canberra Nara Peace Park.
