THIS National Pain Week, Qcity Podiatry and Healthcare’s principal podiatrist Allan Donnelly wants to educate people about the impacts of diabetic foot disease.

With 85 Australians losing a toe, foot or leg to diabetes every week, he says the most significant risk in a person with type 1 or 2 diabetes is the lack of pain, or loss of feeling in their feet.

“People with diabetes who have a loss of sensation and circulation in their feet are considered to be at high risk of developing ulceration, leading to amputation,” says Allan.

“As a result, if their feet sustain an injury they will not feel it and the resultant wound can rapidly proceed to an ulcer and very commonly amputation.

“The statistics for diabetic foot ulceration and amputation in Australia are not good. Twenty-seven Australians die each week as a result of more complex problems associated with diabetic foot disease.”

Allan says his team, which includes podiatrists Kevin Pham-Le and Bunny Upathumpa, offer a broad range of general podiatry services but also have the specific expertise to manage diabetic foot wounds. They are now offering the first private high-risk foot service in their region.

With 42 years’ experience in podiatry, Allan is passionate about the health of diabetics and significantly lowering the number of lower limb amputations. His work in developing an off-loading device to significantly reduce wound healing time won him the inaugural Innovation Tank Award at the Wounds Australia national conference in Adelaide in 2018.
