THE smoke and flames visible to residents in the south of Canberra tonight (February 6) are from back burning in the Gibraltar Peak area today.

The burning will continue overnight as part of the broader containment strategy for the Orroral Valley Fire.

The ACT Esa says there is no threat to ACT properties or suburbs from this operation.
