Skatepark stabbing: What cops know so far

Detective superintendent Scott Moller… “It’s a tragic situation. We need to work out exactly what’s happened and why it’s happened.”

AN 18-year-old is dead and a 16-year-old is recovering in hospital following a “horrific stabbing” at a skatepark in Weston early yesterday (September 27) morning.

At about 1am police responded to reports of a stabbing at a skatepark in Dillon Close. ACT Ambulance attended and treated the two injured men at the scene. One of the men, an 18-year-old, received multiple stab wounds and tragically died at the scene, says ACT Policing detective superintendent Scott Moller.

Superintendent Moller says the 16-year-old is recovering “well” in hospital.

“Police have not yet charged anybody with this incident, however, we have spoken to numerous people and been provided with a large amount of information about what had happened earlier in the evening, which is currently forming part of our investigation,” he says.

“We’ve also spoken to several young people who were involved in the fight at the skatepark on that night. We know there are approximately 12 people involved, and if those people are listening I would encourage them to come forward and talk to us. We’re currently reviewing a large amount of CCTV footage from that area and this will mean that very soon we will have CCTV footage of the vehicles that were involved in the incident at the skatepark.

“I recognise that this death is extremely distressing to our members of our community and there may be families who are concerned about their son’s or their daughter’s involvement in this particular incident. If you think someone you know has been involved in this incident, I encourage you to talk to them and get them to come forward and talk to us. No matter how small the piece of information they may have, it may be the vital piece of information we’re actually looking for.”

Superintendent Moller says the white Toyota that the 18-year-old drove to the skatepark in, is currently being forensically examined.

“We’re looking for fingerprints and DNA along with other evidence found at the scene,” he says.

“I also encourage any businesses in the area if they have any CCTV footage to contact even if they’ve got footage from earlier in the evening.

“Police will be conducting an operation over the next few days and will be canvassing the area, looking for anybody who has CCTV footage of the incident.”

Moller says the incident is “absolutely not gang related” and says there is no evidence to suggest that drugs were involved in the incident either.

“What’s important to know is this is a very serious incident and police are taking it very seriously and we will follow every investigative lead until we find the person responsible for this stabbing and put them before the court,” he says.

“It’s a tragic situation. We need to work out exactly what’s happened and why it’s happened. I hope we have the people before the court very soon.”
