Two districts with a strong sense of community

From health providers to the community centre, Weston Creek and Molonglo Valley have a variety of businesses sharing their skills with the community. “CityNews” speaks with some of them.

LOOKING west are two districts with a strong sense of community and a variety of friendly businesses.

One, Weston Creek, was named after Captain George Edward Weston, a former officer of the East India company, who came to Australia in 1829 and was superintendent of Sydney’s Hyde Park Convict Barracks.

The other, Molonglo Valley derives its name from an Aboriginal expression meaning “the sound of thunder”, and includes the suburbs of Coombs, Denman Prospect, Whitlam and Wright. The development of the Molonglo Valley district acts as a link between Weston Creek to the south and Belconnen to the north.

Clinic helps patients smile with confidence

Dr Unah Thato Entaile-Tidimane.

EVOLVING Smiles dental clinic focuses on the individual needs of a patient and their oral health, providing them an effective and personalised service, says owner Dr Unah Thato Entaile-Tidimane.

The locally owned and operated clinic in Denman Prospect, Molonglo Valley, offers dental implant, orthodontic and general dental services.

“We listen to our patients and work with them to provide outcomes that optimise oral health, creating a healthy, natural smile that is just right for their face,” Dr Unah says.

“Our philosophy is to provide high-quality care with evidence-based dentistry.

“We strive to listen carefully to patients’ concerns and offer our best recommendations, tailored to their needs.

“We believe there’s no better option than keeping your own teeth and preserving oral health.”

With more than 13 years’ clinical experience in government and private practice, Dr Unah believes that good quality dentistry should enhance people’s lifestyle, allowing them to enjoy the food they love, and to smile, laugh and love with confidence.

“While I love all aspects of dentistry, smile makeovers and giving someone the confidence to smile again are perhaps some of the most rewarding moments for me,” she says.

Junic Eye Care’s optometrist Dr Thomas Morton and owner Juliet Menakaya.

Optometrists with a passion for eyecare

IT’S important to consider an optometrist as the first port of call for any vision or eye problem, says Junic Eye Care optometrist Dr Thomas Morton.

“The vast majority of eye problems can be managed with non-surgical solutions, which is where optometry exists,” he says.

“At Junic Eye Care we’re very passionate about team care and will communicate with GPs and coordinate referral pathways to tertiary care with ophthalmologists as required.”

Primary eye health clinic Junic Eye Care opened in September and operates out of the Junic Specialist Centre in the Molonglo Health Hub.

“We offer clinically oriented full-scope optometry services to people of all ages,” Dr Morton says.

“Our services include routine comprehensive eye examinations, low vision assessments and rehabilitation, children’s vision, contact lens fitting and care, dry eye management, emergency and therapeutic eye care.

“We also screen, assess and monitor eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and macular degeneration, with the latest and best diagnostic equipment available including a state-of-the-art optical coherence tomography OCT instrument which takes 3D internal eye scans.”

Junic Eye Care combines primary eye care services with low-vision rehabilitation, and is unique in the partnership between its optometrist Dr Morton and orthoptist, who work alongside each other.

Dr Morton says the team at Junic Eye Care enjoys seeing patients from all ages and walks of life, getting to know the entire family over time and providing patient satisfaction.

Diverse centre runs for the community

WESTON Creek Community Centre has provided a diverse range of services to the community since 1978, says manager Yung Tran.

Adjacent to Cooleman Court Shopping Centre, the centre has four squash courts, a large function hall and kitchen, two meeting rooms and several offices.

“The centre runs exercise and recreation classes, like ‘Mature Fitness’, ‘Zumba Gold’, belly dancing and yoga for beginners,” Yung says.

“We also offer printing, photocopying, binding, scanning and a service of Justice of the Peace.”

The WCCC houses groups including Stromlo Christian Church, Australian War Widows, People with Disabilities, Solid Rock Defence and Valley Baptist Church.

Other regular users include ACT Masters Squash, ACT Miniatures Enthusiasts, Karilee Calisthenics, Canberra Lacemakers, Yoga Enlightenment, Weston Creek Bonsai and many others.

Yung says the centre also manages various rooms for hire, including its newest facility, the Holt Neighbourhood Hall, which includes two small meeting rooms, a large hall and courtyard, next to an oval with a children’s play area and ample parking.

It also manages the Weston Neighbourhood Hall on Hilder Street, Weston, Flynn Community Hall, a “beautiful space” on Bingle Street, Flynn; and the Chifley Community Meeting Room, a modern space on Maclaurin Street, Chifley.

Get to pain before it becomes chronic

Dr Linda Tarran and Dr Sam Teoh of Weston Creek Chiropractic Centre.

CONVENIENTLY located in the Weston Creek town centre, Weston Creek Chiropractic Centre is a patient-focused practice dedicated to getting patients to their optimal health, says Dr Sam Teoh.

Its friendly chiropractors, Sam and Dr Linda Tarran, are dedicated in providing their patients with the best possible chiropractic care, according to Sam.

The centre provides a variety of chiropractic services and often sees patients with issues such as neck pain, back pain, headaches and sports injuries, and also provides services for pregnant women as well as children and babies.

Sam personally sees a lot of patients who are either too sedentary or on the other end, have pushed their body beyond its limits.

“We do use our bodies a lot and some people tend to overuse it and push themselves while injured,” she says.

“The other extreme is people who are too sedentary.

“Bodies are like cars. You can replace the parts but not the body. If you leave pain for too long it can turn into chronic injury and it takes longer to heal, so it’s important to see a chiropractor before it gets to that point.”

The chiropractors at Weston Creek Chiropractic treat all their patients as individuals, says Sam.

“We do a thorough examination and look at their full history for new patients,” she says.
