Walking poles work the whole body

NORDIC Walking is a specific fitness technique and gives a full body workout – it’s not just walking with sticks, says Kristen Pratt of Capital Nordic Walking.

“It can be enjoyed at any level, from the extremely fit to those with health challenges,” she says. “I used to be a competitive runner but I’ve learned that you don’t have to go fast to get a good workout.”

Classes are now up and running as usual, though throughout the COVID-19 restrictions, Kristen says people were reaching out on the Capital Nordic Walking Facebook page to find one other person to walk with – a bit like speed dating.

“It’s been great for getting people outside, and we’re finding that people are coming to us in ready-made groups with their family and friends,” she says.

Nordic Walking combines the simplicity of walking with core and upper body conditioning, and because it doesn’t feel like hard work people are happy to walk further and for longer, Kristen says.

Kristen, who’s an occupational therapist and qualified Nordic Walking and fitness instructor, says it tones more than 90 per cent of the muscles in the body (double that of walking, jogging and cycling), increases cardiovascular activity and burns higher calories.
