THE second show in the series “You’re Safe ‘Til 2024” is coming to the Canberra Theatre Centre this weekend.

It’s part of a six-year project about planetary transformation which sees playwright David Finnigan and musician Reuben Ingall creating six new shows, one each year, from 2019 to 2024, each looking at a different aspect of the changes taking place on the planet.

“Deep History” looks at seven key turning points in the history of humanity, from the Toba supervolcano eruption during the last ice age, which nearly drove humanity extinct, through the death of the last Neanderthal, to the first nuclear tests in the 1940s.

The story is placed against the story of an Australian family during the 2020 bushfires.

Finnigan, armed with a projector, family photos and a pile of sand, sets 75,000 years of human history against 75 hours of danger over New Year’s Eve on the south coast of NSW, in a show full of humour and pop culture, all set to an electronic soundtrack.

The “You Are Here” festival, of which Finnigan was the co-founder and former creative producer, and in which Ingall performed regularly, is offering some free tickets to the show. Email festival@youareherecanberra.com.au.

“You’re Safe ‘Til 2024”, Courtyard Studio, Canberra Theatre Centre, 7.30pm, April 8-10, book here or 6275 2700.
