Improving lives through ‘walking’

Lynn Bloomfield

CAPITAL Nordic Walking’s community partnership co-ordinator Lynn Bloomfield has seen first-hand the benefits that the unique form of exercise can bring to people’s lives.

With a technique similar to cross country skiing, Nordic Walking involves poles that are planted behind the user to propel them along using the power of the upper body as well as the legs, making for great exercise at low exertion.

Lynn works behind the scenes running the business’ outreach program, a job she says is incredibly rewarding and one where she gets to help build a strong community.

“We have a range of volunteers we call our angels and what they do is walk with people who need that bit of extra support,” says Lynn.

“That might be someone who struggles with mobility, someone with an injury or illness, or maybe even neurological conditions that make walking difficult.

“We make sure they’re okay, kept safe, and just provide them with some friendship.”

With a mix of young and old, Lynn says anyone is welcome to come try Nordic walking, which she also says provides as many social benefits as it does physical ones.

“All of our walks end in a coffee at a nearby cafe and you just get to meet some great people,” she says,

“That’s the great thing about Nordic walking, you get to have those fascinating conversations at the same time you’re exercising.”
