Man allegedly assaults cops in lockdown breach

A FISHER man allegedly assaulted three police officers while breaching the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions in Charnwood last night (August 12).

At about 10.30am police allege that a dark coloured Audi appeared to actively avoiding them by turning off its headlights before driving in the wrong direction around the roundabout at the intersection of Ginninderra Drive and Florey Drive.

Police stopped the car on Cartwright Street, Charnwood, but the driver, a 20-year-old from Fisher, refused to answer questions and refused a roadside screening test for alcohol.

When the man was told he was under arrest and when police attempted to remove him from his vehicle, officers allege he “violently resisted”, which led them to taser the man.

Two officers received minor injuries including a dislocated finger, cuts and abrasions. Then, after being transported to ACT Watch House the man allegedly caused injury to a third officer when he kicked the door of the caged vehicle as it was being opened.

The man was charged with multiple offences including three counts of assaulting a frontline community service provider, three counts of obstructing a territory official, refusing to undergo a roadside screening test, damaging commonwealth property, driving while unlicenced, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, negligent driving, and driving with false plates.

As the man was a resident of Fisher and had no lawful reason to be in Charnwood, he was also charged with failing to comply with a health direction.

He is scheduled to face charges in the ACT Magistrates Court.
