Man on bail allegedly crashes into car, injures others

A PERSON is in hospital with suspected neck and spinal injuries after a Hawker man allegedly crashed a stolen car into a white Toyota Hilux in Gungahlin yesterday (July 22).

The Hawker man, a 27-year-old, was on bail when he, alongside a 39-year-old Watson man, allegedly stole a red Fiat 500 at about 7.50pm yesterday from outside a grocery store in Gungahlin. The driver of the car had left the vehicle unsecured and had gone into the store.

About five minutes later the Fiat was involved in a collision with a white Toyota Hilux on Anthony Rolfe Avenue, Gungahlin, which caused the Hilux to completely roll over, and the Fiat to collide with a tree.

Four people in the Hilux received treatment at the scene, with one of them taken to hospital for suspected neck and spinal injuries. Both men in the stolen Fiat were transported to hospital by ambulance.

The Hawker man has been charged with driving while suspended, property damage and driving a motor vehicle without consent. He was also arrested last week while on bail.

The alleged passenger, the Watson man, was charged with joint commission of tasking a motor vehicle and riding in a motor vehicle without consent.

Both men will face charges at the ACT Magistrates Court, and police expect to lay charges against both men arising from other unrelated offences.
