Two resign from ACT Supreme Court

ACT Chief Justice Helen Murrell.

CANBERRA’S first female Chief Justice, Helen Murrell, and Justice John Burns both resigned from the ACT Supreme Court last night (April 27).

Justice John Burns

Ms Murrell served as chief justice since 2013 and Mr Burns worked as a judge since 2011 and was a Magistrate for 19 years before that.

Justice Burns is expected to complete his duties on August 31 while Chief Justice Murrell will retire on March 6 next year.

Following their resignations, ACT Attorney-General Shane Rattenbury, on behalf of the ACT government and the Canberra community, offered his sincere thanks to Chief Justice Murrell and Justice Burns for their contribution to the law in the ACT.

A recruitment process to appoint new judges will begin shortly. The criteria that apply to the appointment of resident judges are set out in the “Supreme Court (Resident Judges Appointment Requirements) Determination 2015 (No 1)”.
