Bus services cancelled as drivers call in sick from covid

DRIVER absence from covid has disrupted the Canberra bus network this afternoon (May 20) with 26 services cancelled up to 3pm.

Transport Canberra says this number is likely to be higher with 35 drivers calling in sick because of COVID-19. It has been bringing in staff from across the broader directorate and casual workers to get through the afternoon rush hours.

Affected services this afternoon included suburban and rapid routes. All dedicated school buses operated as normal this afternoon. Bus services on public routes that carry school students were prioritised in the context of reduced services. Light rail, the Special Needs Transport Service and Flexible Bus Service have not been affected.

Transport Canberra is trying to fill upcoming shifts for the weekend and beyond. They expect that the majority of bus services will be available over the weekend – including for people who want to use public transport to get to a polling booth for the federal election.
