Fugitive grabs woman as police close in

A WOMAN was taken hostage following a police chase that ended on a golf course in Yarralumla yesterday (June 21), police report.

They say the 25-year-old driver faces multiple charges after he allegedly stole a Holden Commodore from a home in Florey on Sunday.  

Police spotted the Commodore moving at high speed in Kingston yesterday, travelling on the incorrect side of Wentworth Avenue before colliding head-on with another vehicle.

A short time later, police located and chased the runaway car out of Weston Park, Yarralumla, before it collided with a fence and the driver ran off into the Royal Canberra Golf Course.

While still being pursued by police, the man took grabbed a woman and a short stand-off ensued. Officers drew their tasers, the woman was released soon after and the man was taken into custody. The woman was not physically harmed during this altercation.

The 25-year-old man has been charged with two counts of failing to stop a motor vehicle for police, two counts of dangerous driving, driving a motor vehicle without consent, damaging property, driving without a licence, using an offensive weapon, making a demand with a threat to kill, possessing a drug of dependence, and driving under the influence.
