A LEGISLATIVE Assembly committee will conduct an inquiry looking into the discrimination faced by members of Canberra’s deaf community, due to lack of access to services and information in Auslan.

Auslan is the language of Australia’s deaf community.

The Committee on Education and Community Inclusion, chaired by Labor MLA Michael Pettersson, will investigate how a lack of services available in Auslan is driving discrimination and disadvantage in the deaf community.

“Deaf people face significant challenges every day due to lack services and information in accessible formats,” Mr Pettersson said.

“We want the deaf community to advise us on how the ACT Government can improve their quality of life.”

The inquiry, being launched today (May 31) will also consider measures to improve access to services and information in Auslan in the public and private sectors, creation of objectives and targets to measure improvements, and mechanisms to report against those indicators.

The inquiry committee is asking for submissions until July 15.
