Driver under police guard at Canberra Hospital

By Kathryn Magann

A man is in Canberra Hospital under police guard after he allegedly fled the scene of a car accident that killed his passenger.

Emergency crews were called to Vulcan Street in Cooma, in southern NSW, just before midnight on Saturday after reports a car had left the road and hit a tree.

An man in his 20s was found in the front passenger seat and was assessed by paramedics but died at the scene, NSW Police said on Sunday.

A crime scene was established and forensically examined by officers attached to the Crash Investigation Unit.

Police were told the driver was seen running from the single-car crash.

A 23 year-old man who presented with injuries at Canberra Hospital was later arrested, and remains in a stable condition under police guard.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses to contact them with any information as they investigate the cause of the crash.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
