Like a Christmas stocking stuffed with goodies, the Llewellyn Choir presented a large and wide-ranging program of Christmas treats for the festive season, says reviewer LEN POWER.

In addition to the singing of the choir with Anthony Smith as accompanist and Rowan Harvey-Martin conducting, there were performances from the Pentecostal International Worship Centre Choir, the PNG Peroveta Singers and the To e Talatalanoa Uniting Church Choir.

There were also performances by Canberra musicians Dante Costa, flute; Jojo Yuen, piano; Emily Thornton, flute, and Alex Monro, harp.

The program’s international flavour included works by Berlioz, Mendelssohn, Gounod, Dvořák, Rutter, Jiangzhong, Schütz and Nordqvist as well as traditional works from Tonga, Papua New Guinea and Africa.

It’s time to enjoy Christmas music, whether carols, pop songs playing in the shopping malls or deeply reflective classical music, writes arts editor HELEN MUSA.

Canberra’s Luminescence Children’s Choir will be at the forefront, presenting a completely new song cycle as part of the annual season, A Luminous Christmas.

And in a Canberra-conceived international venture, the cycle, commissioned from composer and ABC Music Show host Andrew Ford, will be performed by the Canberra choir here, in Antwerp Cathedral between its two large Rubens paintings, in Tallin, Estonia and in Perth.

With funding from all quarters, including Canberra’s Helen Moore and the APRA AMCOS Art Music Fund 2023, the Flanders Boys Choir, Estonian Girls’ TV and Radio Choir, and the Schola Cantorum of St Aquinas College in Perth, it’s a formidable project.

Geologist Robert (Bob) John Tingey was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1987, aged just 46.

But his wife, celebrated artist and founder of the Tingey Painting with Parkinsons Program, Nancy Tingey, says they didn’t hide away.

“In 1993, the founding CEO of Parkinson’s ACT retired due to ill health, and Bob took over,” says Nancy.

“I knew that they were going to expect me to be secretary, and that was my worst nightmare, because I’m an artist, and I was already having to curtail my activities a lot because of Bob’s illness.

“I could see the writing on the wall… so I thought I’d better think of something else quickly.”
