PLASTIC straws are among the single-use plastic items being banned in the ACT from July 1.
Cotton buds with plastic sticks and all oxo-degradable plastics are also prohibited, as the ACT government moves to further reduce plastic waste.
The move follows the introduction of last year’s ban on plastic cutlery and drink stirrers, some plastic bags as well as expanded polystyrene takeaway food and drink containers.
The only exemption for plastic straws will be for Canberrans who have a disability, with cafes and restaurants allowed to supply individuals with single use plastic straws upon request.
Aged care and disability facilities will still be required to stock plastic straws.
