Affecting four to 16 per cent of Australians, eating disorders are a serious mental health condition that involves an unhealthy obsession with eating, exercising or dieting.

Following a similar 12-step recovery plan as Alcoholics Anonymous groups do, Overeaters Anonymous (OA) is a fellowship of members who wish to put an end to compulsive overeating or dangerous dieting and exercising practices.

Founded in 1960 in America by the anonymous Rozanne S, the OA fellowship was established to combat addiction to food.

“It’s not about dieting or coming in and saying ‘oh, you can’t do this and you can’t do that’, or getting on the scales,” says a member from the Canberra group, we’ll call Sam.

“Most of us have spent years trying all of those things before we came in after suddenly realising one day that it isn’t working.”

Diversity may be a dirty word in some parts of the world, but not here and certainly not at the National Folk Festival, coming to Exhibition Park in Canberra over Easter.

With its companion, quirkiness, diversity will be front and centre in this year’s gathering at EPIC if artistic directors Chris Stone, Michael Sollis, and Holly Downes have anything to do with it.

“It’s traditional but innovation takes place,” president of the National Folk Festival, David Gilks says.

Following the top national cultural policy principle, they’ve programmed in a fun “First Nations First” line-up of artists, including Stiff Gins, poet Sassi Spirit, local writing group Us Mob, Wiradjuri Echoes, Ngunnawal custodian Richie Allan and self-described Blak women’s trio, Suga Cane Mamas.

Gardening columnist JACKIE WARBURTON has a hero plant this week – the Chinese plumbago with its blue flowers and red autumnal foliage.

My hero plant this week is Chinese plumbago, she says, a deciduous shrub that grows well in our region.

Its flowers are in bloom now. They are the most amazing cobalt blue colour and once the autumnal foliage begins to turn red, the contrast is really lovely and has a long-lasting summer and autumn display.

Chinese plumbago (ceratostigma plumbaginoides) can be used as a small hedge. It has a slow suckering habit that can be clipped into shape. It grows best in full sun, where it flowers well.

There is a new, smaller, powder-blue flowering variety available called Summer Sky, which grows under a metre tall.

“The Monster is an omnivore”. This website declaration signals a switch in Monster Kitchen and Bar’s menu from solely plant-based to meat and plant dishes.

We popped in for lunch. Given that the main restaurant is only open for dinner, we settled into a table in the casual dining area tucked into a corner on the ground floor of Ovolo Nishi.

We lucked in with a place near the window, brightening our experience with natural light.

Let’s start with the mains from the bar menu on offer, which were our favourites by far. Sharing was our aim to taste test a wider range of dishes.
