Artsday/ ‘Cuppa’ comes alive with art again

The weekend looms. Here’s HELEN MUSA’s “Artsday” guide what’s happening where.

CUPPACUMBALONG Homestead  at Tharwa  has recently undergone renovations sensitive to its ’20s provenance. The Homestead gallery is now hosting “20/20/20 Vision” by Michael Pugh, October 15 to November 6.

QUEANBEYAN-Palerang Arts Trail’s focus will be Queanbeyan from October 15-16 . Details here

SARAH St Vincent Welch will be chalking poems on the footpaths of the National Arboretum round the Village Centre from 10am and in the Himalayan Cedar Forest in the afternoon on October 15, then in the Gallery of Gardens in the morning, and on Dairy Farmers Hill Lookout in the afternoon on October 16.

THE National Endangered Skills and Trades Show showcases artisans, makers, with demonstrations of these traditional trades in demonstrations at the Kingston Bus Depot, October 14-16 and a seminar at the National Museum on October 14 from 6pm-8pm.

Exhibitions

  • FOUR new exhibitions are opening at 6pm Friday, October 14 at Belco Arts: “Tree Whispers”, an exhibition by members of Networks Australia; “ A City for All Seasons,” Mick Ashley’s look into the many facets of Canberra life, its subtle urban sprawl, cultural quirks and that tapestry of exotic and indigenous nature; veteran portrait artist An Pan’s “Lovely People in Lovely Country “; and “Brindabella Series,” ceramic vessels by Oliver Owens. The exhibitions run until November 27.
  • A new photographic display detailing the Australian response to the Bali bombings is now on show at the Australian War Memorial. Visitors will need a free ticket to the AWM to see this display, which will be on show until November 20.

  • THE Czech and Slovak Film Festival is in Canberra at Arc Cinema, on October 14 and 16. Program here
  • STRONGER Than Fiction documentary series next take a look at the psychological aftermath of China’s One Child Policy in “All About My Sisters”. Dendy, Civic, 3pm, October 16.

Concerts

  • SIX-piece Aria-nominated ensemble Chaika will perform music of the Balkans and Europe, jazz, classical and all the in-betweens, at Smith’s Alternative, Civic, October 14.
  • PHOENIX Collective performs Schubert and Janacek’s in “Notes of Obsession”, All Saints Church, Ainslie, Friday October 14.
  • SOUNDOUT Series has an evening of free improvisation music and experimental film at Old Antic Hair shop, 8-10 Petrie Plaza, October 15.
  • ELLERY String Quartet performs “Musica Universalis” at Mt Stromlo Observatory, 8pm, October 15.
  • LUMINESCENCE Chamber Singers will perform their new program, “Drawing Breath” at the National Museum of Australia, Sunday, October 16.
  • ART Song Canberra’s next concert, “The Time of Roses”, will feature mezzo-soprano Jill Sullivan with Donna Balson on piano. Wesley Music Centre, Forrest, 3pm, Sunday, October 16.

On stage

  • “MUSIC of the Night,” a trip through journey through the songbooks of Lloyd Webber, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Sondheim is at the ”B,” the Bicentennial Hall, Queanbeyan, 2pm, Saturday, October 15.
  • QUEANBEYAN Players return with the Gilbert and Sullivan favourite, “HMS Pinafore”, The Q. Until October 23.
  • IN QL2 Dance’s “Chaos” project, 40 young people aged between 8 and 18 with four professional choreographers, present “Big Little Things”. Canberra College, Phillip, 6pm-7pm, October 14, 3pm-4pm and 6pm-7pm, October 15. Details here
  • REBUS Theatre explores communities in “At The End Of Our Street”, The Street Theatre, Saturday, October 15, 2pm. All proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross Disaster Response and Recovery program.
