New race chief promises to fight for funding

The newly elected Canberra Racing Club Committee.

LES Boag is the new chair of the Canberra Racing Club’s (CRC). He and five other candidates were elected to the club’s committee at its annual general meeting yesterday (October 11).

The other committee members elected are Liz Clarke, Emmanuel Notaras, Matthew Ryan, Daniel Gaul and Greg Friedewald.

Boag replaces outgoing chair Tim Olive. Liz Clarke was elected vice chair and Duncan Edghill, treasurer.

Boag said he was honoured to be taking on the responsibility at such a pivotal time for the Canberra Racing Club, coming as it does with the Greens today announcing a move to amend the ACT Budget to phase out the $41 million public subsidy to the industry.

He said: “I will keep pushing CRC to fight harder for a fair share of the funding our racing product provides to the ACT government.

“I am confident that this new and enthusiastic committee will be able to work together in a way that strengthens the club and takes advantage of all opportunities to cement the club and Thoroughbred Park as vibrant assets for the racing community and the Canberra community at large.”

Boag joined the committee eight years ago and has previously been vice chair and treasurer.
