Arts editor HELEN MUSA lists another full week of Canberra arts events in her latest “Artsweek” column. 

GREEK musos Evi Seitanidou and Athanas Zikas, named Kadinelia (after a falcon in the Cycladic islands), are a hot duo who fuse traditional Greek folk forms with bluegrass and various hip western genres. Billled as “ the new iconoclasts of Byzantium”, they’ll be at Smith’s Alternative on October 8.

THE debut novel by Suzie Miller, “Prima Facie”, will be discussed at The Street Theatre, October 4.

THREE local authors, Emma Grey, Barbara Baikie and Valerie Albrecht, join moderator Barbie Robinson, in a sunset discussion of books and life. At Barbara Baikie and Peter Fletcher’s rural property near Hall, “Terroux”, October 8.

FORMER diplomatic spouse turned food blogger and trade officer, Linda Peek, has written a memoir, “Malta: A Childhood Under Siege”, about her mother, who grew up in Malta during World War II. She will launch the book at Griffith Neighbourhood Hall on October 6.

GREG Evans, the former host of “Perfect Match Australia”, is guest of honour at the 10th anniversary of the monthly Vinyl Club, where attendees bring their favourite records and share stories. At the NFSA Theatrette, October 6.

Film

• THE Japanese Film festival opens with “We’re Broke, My Lord!”, a tale of unexpected inheritance. A family-friendly selection is the Harry Potter-like “Yokaipedia,” where three boys embark on a thrilling quest filled with monsters. Palace Electric October 11-15.
• THE NFSA’s Arc Cinema has a premiere screening + Q&A of “Kindred”, a 2023 documentary by Wodi Wodi woman and NFSA staffer Gillian Moody and Wonnarua man Adrian Russell Wills, October 6.
• THE new “What The Film” Festival is at the National Film & Sound Archive, October 7.

Concerts

• THE Vision String Quartet will play Bartók’s String Quartet No. 4, Dvořák ‘s String Quartet No. 13 and Bloch’s Prelude. Llewellyn Hall, October 5.
• SALUT! Baroque’s 2023 concert series concludes in October with “The Cosmopolitans”, Albert Hall, October 6.
• IN “Off the Cuff”, Shortis and Simpson do a performance like real musicians – no script, just off-the-cuff chats, a mixture of covers and originals. Smith’s Alternative, October 6.
• VIOLINIST Daniel Röhn and pianist Simon Tedeschi will perform golden music from the early 20^th century. Snow Concert Hall, October 7.
• CANBERRA Symphony Orchestra String Quintet is joined by vocalist Rachael Thoms and Tuggeranong’s “Singing with Toby” choir. Lanyon Homestead, October 7.
• CANBERRA Men’s Choir has its “come and try” open night, no experience needed. Harmonie German Club, Narrabundah, October 9.
• “DEPT of Rock”, showcasing musicians who work in the ACT and federal government sectors, continues at Smith’s Alternative with Heat 2, October 10.

• FLAZEDA Hub has music – mostly punk – played by the band “nonbinarycode” and acts such as  fire eating, water dance in a giant martini glass, drag, sideshow, butoh, feather fan dancing, fan veil dancing, and burlesque will perform at Unit 4/68 Emu Bank, Belconnen, October 7.

Exhibitions

• CANBERRA artist Katrina Barter’s background is in 3D textile and paper installation-based art, but her new exhibition “Memoryscapes”, is a exploration of abstracted memory through painting. ANCA Gallery, Dickson, October 5-22.
