Homeless laundry stops after machines stolen

The Weston Creek Community Centre… robbed on Friday.

The Weston Creek Community Centre’s free laundry service for homeless people has been suspended after thieves stole the washing machine and dryer.

Manager Yung Tran said a thief cut open the gate padlock at the Cooleman Court centre’s back courtyard around 3am on Friday morning.

The two machines were a Bosch 10kg Series 8 washing machine and Bosch 8kg Series 8 heat pump dryer.

The machines were set up by the centre about a year ago to provide free laundry services for the homeless and people in need.

“It was an extremely upsetting and disappointing event as this service is now suspended while we are considering whether to reinstate the facility in the new year,” Yung Tran said.

“Please contact the police if anyone saw any suspicious movement last Friday morning around the back of the
community centre, health centre and the Irish Club, or if you see [either of the machines] on sale online.”

Selfish people stole from those doing it toughest, homeless people. This service was essential to the pride and wellbeing of people without homes and a place to wash their clothes. What a terrible theft!
