AS the end of January draws near, a big weekend for alternate arts in Canberra also looms in the world of burlesque.

Jazida Productions, run by busy mum of two and former finalist for the ACT Business Woman of the Year, Rachel Reid, is working hard to support artists through the pandemic, with three activities designed to support performing artists and local charities through COVID-19 recovery for 2022.

On January 28, “Bangarag”, an intimate variety show that runs on the last Friday of every month will kick off for the year at of Flazéda Hub in Belconnen, featuring local artists raising money for different charities, this month Diversity ACT.

Then on January 29, they’ll stage “Decadence and Debauchery” at Belconnen Arts Centre.

It’s a burlesque variety show that’s been selling out and touring across Australia for the last five years, but these performances show also coincide with the first birthday of Flazéda Hub.

Not only will there be the usual “D&D” line-up, with interstate celebrity guest MC Valerie Hex, Auslan interpretation and items for sale and auction, but the show will also be a fundraiser for the 2022 program of work running out of Flazéda, which sees artists get access to scholarship programs, mentorship programs, and other professional development and performance opportunities.

“Finding innovative ways to support performing arts, has been so important through this pandemic, which has taken away the livelihood of so many people in the arts industry” Reid says.

She should know. Armed with support from the Australian Cultural Fund, Jazida Productions’ campaign will provide tax-deductible receipts for donations.

Both “Bangarang” and “Decadence and Debauchery” are being live-streamed, too.

On January 30, Jazida Productions is bringing “Drive By Dream” in partnership with Sidestage Production Services, where a flatbed truck, decked out with lights, smoke, and sound will travel around the ACT with pop-up outdoor performances.

Finally, at 6pm on January 30, they’ll close off the day with a drag culture dance masterclass taught by Hex, who’s visiting from Melbourne especially for these events.
