Queanbeyan gets a new bridge over Buttles Creek, improved access to Spotlight

QUEANBEYAN Council has installed a new footbridge over Buttles Creek in eastern Queanbeyan.

“Council was approached by community members regarding the construction of a footbridge across Buttles Creek to increase access to the Wright Park sports precinct,” Mayor Tim Overall said.

“Prior to the construction of the bridge, Council was required to approach the owner of the land that is occupied by Spotlight and other retailers where the bridge is located. The land owners agreed to lease a small section of their land to Council for the bridge and Council is extremely grateful for their assistance in bringing this project to fruition.

“In developing its Delivery Program for 2013-17, Council allocated $80,000 to construct the footbridge.

“This is a very welcome asset for Queanbeyan and provides a safe pedestrian link for the residents of Elizabeth Crescent, Carwoola St and neighbouring streets to the Wright Park sports precinct. Previously, residents were required to negotiate an unsafe embankment/creek crossing to access the precinct and it was not possible for disabled and elderly residents or residents with young children.”

The bridge structure is made of a composite polymer fibres, is light weight (2.5 tonnes), is more environmentally friendly than traditional materials and is above the flood level of the creek. The decking boards are made of recycled plastics.

The bridge will be open to the public in two weeks after further work to chemset the bolts, construct a footpath, and install handrails
