THE National Gallery of Australia says it has “snared” the services of former director of the Canberra International Film festival Simon Weaving to curate a six-week program of films to be screened in June and July this year.
Katie Russell, acting manager Learning and Access at the gallery, said they were “thrilled” to include the series in the calendar for June and July. “Film, like other art
forms, has the power to take us beyond the limits of self, and these six films reveal aspects of the world of art and beauty and the creative forces at work in those worlds
that will inspire and challenge audiences,” she said.
Weaving will unveil the films tomorrow. “If you love art, fashion, storytelling or the sight of a FIAT Bambino whizzing through the Italian countryside, then there’s something here for you,” he said, adding, “what really unites the selection of film is the sense that the filmmakers and their subjects are all fascinated by the transcendent power of art and beauty, whether it’s in the form of a photographic image, a human face or even a nation.”
We can reveal that the six-film series includes new documentaries about performance artist Marina Abramovic and celeb photographer Gregory Crewdson, fashion and modelling, and “Final Cut,” the new film from Hungarian filmmaker Gyorky Palfi made up of short snippets from 450 of the world’s most famous films of all time, edited to create the ultimate love story.
