Final election results announced

ACT Electoral Commissioner Phil Green today announced the candidates to be elected to the Assembly and represent Canberra’s three electorates.

Candidates to be elected, in the order in which they were successful in the count, are:

In a collaboration between two well-known Canberra

In a collaboration between two well-known Canberra institutions, empty gin bottles are getting a new lease of artistic life.

Inspired by the clear blue of the Bombay Sapphire Gin bottles, local pub owner Peter Barclay began to put aside the empties from King O’Malleys awaiting an idea.

When it came, he contacted Canberra Glassworks’ production and commissions manager Jacqeline Knight with the thought that his collection of empty blue bottles might be repurposed.

Designer and glassblower Katie-Ann Houghton turned the bottles into vases, five of which are now hung in his Civic pub as a bespoke chandelier.

“It is a wonderful partnership and a beautiful story,” Peter says.

The focus of this concert by the Luminescence Cham

The focus of this concert by the Luminescence Chamber Singers and Luminescence Children’s Choir, was the world premiere of a new Christmas song cycle by Andrew Ford, says reviewer GRAHAM McDONALD.

Commissioned by Luminescence and working in the same sort of way as his acclaimed Red Dirt Hymns, Ford has taken 10 short poems or texts and set them to music for a children’s choir, accompanied by electric guitar.

The 10 texts have been set to fairly simple melodies, well suited to the abilities of a young choir and often suggesting folk songs, Protestant hymns or popular Christmas carols in their scoring. Occasionally Ford has thrown in an unexpected harmony or two for the singers, but mostly has left it to Theo Carbo’s electric guitar to add the harmonic interest as well as setting the rhythmic pulse and pitch. It is a clever way to use a varied and inventive accompaniment to support the singers without the old-fashioned pitchpipe or keyboard.

In our climate, we usually plant roses when they are dormant in winter. Planting roses at this time of the year will need a lot of TLC to get them established through the summer heat.

The choices of roses are endless from climbers, thornless, pillar, David Austins and hybrid teas, just to name a few.
