It’s a nice day for a pink wedding…

ENTER the Richardson studio of designer Vicky Kidd-Gallichan and it’s the furthest thing from a stiff, traditional bridal store.

Glamorous gowns in pink, red and peach catch the eye – all created by the friendly, pink haired designer under her label, Rockstars and Royalty.

Since launching the label in 2007, Vicky estimates she’s done “a few hundred weddings” for Canberra brides who want to stand out on their big day.

“I use a lot of traditional wedding shapes like tulle skirts, but give them a twist,” Vicky says.

“So many clients say I’ve made the dress they dreamed of. I think they have a bit more fun in colours. The brides start crying…I’ve got the only job in the world where it’s a good thing to make people cry!”

The English-born designer, who moved to Canberra six years ago, was originally told to stay away from the capital as “the people were too boring and wouldn’t buy the dresses,” but she says business has been booming.

“I’ve got a lot of clients from word of mouth, since Canberra is one of those places that usually relies on that,” she says.

“I don’t get why people say Canberrans are boring. I’ve had so many people come in and say, ‘this is just what we’ve been after!’ There’s nothing else really like it here.”

Vicky, who cites Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen as her inspirations, describes her range as “very feminine, with an alternative, rock n’ roll twist.”

“It’s very varied; I’ve done a classic ivory wedding dress or a bold, colourful modern gown; some vintage Hollywood glamour or some rock star extravagance,” she says.

“Having a Rockstars and Royalty gown or corset made is a true couture experience, with everything designed, cut, sewn, fitted and hand finished by me.”

As well as wedding dresses, the range features accessories and bodices.

Rockstars and Royalty will feature on the runway tomorrow night at Fashfest. For more information about Rockstars and Royalty visit rockstarsandroyalty.com.au
