THE Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s chief conductor and artistic director, Nicholas Milton, is gearing up for a spectacular opening to the 2015 season.
Performing this Wednesday and Thursday, the orchestra will open the year’s concert season with Schubert’s “Magic Harp Overture”, Dvorak’s Cello Concerto and Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5
The evening opens with the ‘wizardry’ of Schubert as the CSO performs “one of the most bewitching overtures of the orchestral repertoire”.
Then young New Zealand cellist, Edward King, fresh from the Australian Cello Awards, will join the orchestra to perform Dvorak’s Cello Concerto.
This evening concludes with the inspiring Fifth Symphony by Sibelius, chosen by Milton to commemorate the Finnish composer’s anniversary year. This symphony was inspired by Sibelius’ sighting of sixteen swans, of which he wrote in his diary “One of the great experiences of my life! God, how beautiful.”
