ANDREW Barr and Yvette Berry are calling on developers, builders and other property owners to submit expressions of interest to provide new homes for Canberra’s public housing tenants.
The Public Housing Renewal Taskforce has called for expressions of interest as part of its wider program to build and buy new homes to replace ageing public housing.
“We want to give our public housing tenants the quality homes they deserve – and this is the largest public housing program in the territory’s history,” Andrew said.
“The expression of interest forms part of a wider program to replace 1,288 ageing public housing dwellings across Canberra through a comprehensive mix of methods, including construction and purchase.”
“This expression of interest is part of the government’s once-in-a-generation commitment to renew our public housing stock and is part of a $159 million commitment in this year’s budget to build new, modern homes that better meets tenants’ needs, now and into the future,” Yvette said.
“We are committed to building better homes because the reality is that much of our high density housing stock is outdated and could never be modified to meet modern standards of housing in our community.
Proposals are sought from builders, developers and property owners with:
- eligible land or development packages
- yet to be developed multi unit properties
- completed or near completed unsold multi unit properties
- other property solutions, including design and construct models
Eligible properties need to comply with design and liveability criteria, and be available for occupation no later than 31 December 2018.
Details on the expression of interest are available on the Government’s procurement website at procurement.act.gov.au or by calling Colliers International.
