IT was in late October that the first signs of trouble appeared on Civic’s Petrie Plaza.
Men with hard hats and maps were walking around with men in suits having intense conversations.
Something was clearly up.
A month later the vast works were complete and a Guiness world record was claimed by the Christmas light installation.
And today, nearly three months later, the fencing has come down, Smoque’s horrible tent has been restored to its rightful place, the homeless alcoholics are back at their table while police look on, and the footsore shopgirls of David Jones can have a smoke off their feet without having to share a bench with the homeless alcoholics.
Until October rolls around again and the lights take over once more.
Who can be trusted?
In a world of spin and confusion, there’s never been a more important time to support independent journalism in Canberra.
If you trust our work online and want to enforce the power of independent voices, I invite you to make a small contribution.
Every dollar of support is invested back into our journalism to help keep citynews.com.au strong and free.
