PROMINENT Canberra guitarist and musical entrepreneur Matt Withers has announced the winners of the 2020 Matt Withers Australian Music Composition Competition.
The requirement was that entrants compose a work inspired by the artwork “Outback” by Queensland artist Sue Needham.
First prize for a new composition for classical guitar went to Sydney guitarist and music educationist James Madsen, who won $3000.
Melbourne’s Meredith Connie, a representative composer at the Australian Music Centre, took out second place and won $1000.
Sydney’s Julia Vlahogiannis, who improvises on piano, clarinet, saxophone and bass guitar, claimed the U25 Emerging Composer Award of $750.
The pieces will be included on an upcoming ABC Classic album performed by Withers and pianist Sally Whitwell alongside the works of Ross Edwards, Nigel Westlake, Canberra’s Sally Greenaway and a brand new commission by Whitwell.
The three winning works will be presented and workshopped at a public, free event at the ANU School of Music at 5.30pm on Thursday, March 26.
