Belconnen explosion destroys several stores

SEVERAL stores were destroyed and many other properties damaged in an explosion in in Rae Street, Belconnen, tonight (December 27). 

Police are investigating the cause of the explosion, which occurred at about about 7.30pm.

Firefighters extinguished blazes in multiple premises and one man was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police say that while the full extent of the damage is still being determined, multiple premises were gutted by the fire and other stores nearby suffered considerable fire and smoke damage.

Several roads in the area were closed, and expected to remain closed into Tuesday morning.

Anyone who witnessed the explosion is asked to call 131444.
