Calls for assistance as heavy storms hit Canberra

THE ACT State Emergency Service has received more than 50 requests for assistance in the last hour as heavy storms pass through the territory.

As a result of the strong winds a number of trees have fallen across roadways, making up a majority of the calls for assistance.

Canberra airport has recorded wind gusts of up to 87km/h.

Some parts of Belconnen are being affected by power outages.

The storms are expected to pass through the territory quickly, but Canberrans are advised to take caution.

For emergency assistance in flood and storm call the ACTSES on 132 500. If the incident is life threatening dial emergency Triple Zero (000).
