CHILD Players ACT, Director Belinda (BJ) Anyos, are performing “The Velveteen Rabbit – How Toys Become Real” to a score performed and recorded by Susan West. Written 100 years ago, it is relevant to the time as it tells the story of a young boy struck down with Scarlet fever and only having his toys for company due to “isolation”. Belconnen Community Theatre, 11am and 2pm, October 5-8.
In the theatres
- “CRUEL Intentions: The ’90s Musical” sees the cult classic 1999 film turned into a jukebox musical. Canberra Theatre, October 5-8.
- “ELEMENTAL” by Warehouse Circus features a massive cast of young circus performers. Street Theatre in Civic, October 5-8.
- EVERYMAN Theatre is staging “Beautiful Thing” by Jonathan Harvey, set in the summer of 1993 in Margaret Thatcher’s London. ACT Hub, Kingston, October 5-15.
- “SOUL Trading” is Kate Walder’s sci-fi play that asks the big questions about our relationship with technology. Canberra Youth Theatre at the Courtyard Studio, Canberra Theatre, October 5-8.
- “ROALD Dahl and the Imagination Seekers” is coming to Tuggeranong Arts Centre October 6-8. Especially made for ages six and up, the show is immersive, involving games and imaginative play.
Concerts
- YOUNG pianist Charles Huang appears in his sixth recital in the Wesley Lunchtime series to perform Bach and Beethoven. Wesley Music Centre, 12.40pm-1.20pm, Wednesday, October 5.
- MUSIC lovers can bring lunch and enjoy to a free live music event led by teachers Jess Green and Llewellyn Osbourne from the ANU Open School of Music’s Girls Jazz program. ANU School of Art & Design Gallery, ANU Building 105, 1pm-1.30pm, Wednesday, October 5, all welcome.
- MUSICA Viva has Israeli mandolinist Avi Avital and Russian pianist Konstantin Shamray presenting four centuries of traditional Salento, Bulgarian, Turkish, Sephardic and Macedonian music. Llewellyn Hall, 7pm, Wednesday, October 5.
- GEOFF’S Jazz at Smiths features local heroes Miroslav Bukovsky, John Mackey, Mark Sutton, Lachlan Coventry and Greg Stott. Smith’s Alternative 7pm, October 5.
