A P-plater has had his BMW seized after attempting to race a fully-marked police car, reaching 161km/h in an 80km/h zone.

About 8.30pm on Sunday (May 22) officers in Florey observed a black BMW 3231 sedan accelerate away from them on Ginninderra Drive.

The driver told police he thought they were “his mates trying to race him,” and confirmed to the officer he was attempting to race their fully marked police vehicle.

He admitted to police he had only recently regained his licence, having previously lost it for speeding.

Penalties for street racing include significant fines and loss of licence, with the driver to face court at a date yet to be decided.

ACT Policing Acting Inspector Steve Booth said he was dismayed by this incident after three fatalities had been recorded on ACT roads in the preceding three days.

“It is difficult to express my incredulity at driver behaviour like this example.

“I have a simple message to drivers, and it does not change. Slow down.”
