Poison carrot baits ruinous rabbits

A wild rabbit.

CARROTS laced with a strain of the calicivirus will be released in Queanbeyan in a bid to stop wild rabbits causing damage.

Small pieces of carrot baited with RHDV-K5 – a new Korean strain of the calicivirus – will be scattered on bushland in areas of the Bicentennial Park.

A post on the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council (QPRC) Facebook page says:

“Unfortunately, wild rabbits have been damaging the important bushland environment in Bicentennial Park.

“On October 17, we will be releasing small pieces of carrot treated with the calicivirus.”

The Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV) is specific to the european rabbit and causes internal bleeding, organ failure and death.

The virus does not affect humans or domestic animals other than rabbits.

Vaccinations against the virus for pet rabbits are available at the vet.

“Signs about the laced carrots will be placed in the Bicentennial park,” the post says.

“Please ensure children do not pick up the pieces of carrot and pets are kept on a leash.”
