Postal vote option for Monaro by-election

VOTERS heading to the polls in the Monaro by-election next month will have the option to cast their ballot via post, as the state continues to wrestle with its COVID-19 outbreak.

The by-election for the state seat of Monaro, and three other NSW districts, is being held on February 12.

As a COVID-19 safety measure, the NSW Electoral Commission has announced that voters will have the option to cast their ballot via post.

John Schmidt, NSW Electoral Commissioner, said postal voting packs would be sent to every voter, and voting in person would start from January 31.
“To help reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, postal voting will be open to everyone on the electoral roll in Monaro, and postal voting packs will be automatically sent to them,” Mr Schmidt said.
“Voters can choose to vote via post, or in person at our voting centres. People using postal voting are encouraged to make sure they follow the instructions in the pack to complete their postal vote before 6pm on February 12, and get their ballot papers back to us by the cut-off for accepting postal votes on  February 25.”

All voting centres will adhere to covid safe election guidelines, including mandatory mask-wearing, physical distancing, single-use pens, queue management and QR-code check ins.

The Monaro by-election is a result of the resignation of the former deputy premier John Barilaro.
