TAKEAWAY containers and plastic bags could soon be banned in the ACT as the government continues to phase out single-use plastics.
City Services Minister Chris Steel said the government will seek feedback from businesses on the proposal to axe a third tranche of plastic items from July next year.
These items include:
- Boutique or heavyweight plastic bags (greater than 35 microns thick)
- Single-use plastic takeaway containers
- Single-use plastic plates and bowls
- Plastic microbeads in rinse-off personal care, cosmetic and cleaning products
Steel said the government will also soon be releasing a draft “Circular Economy Strategy”.
“The strategy will consider how we create and support new jobs, better manage problematic waste streams and design supply chains to stop waste streams from emerging in the first place,” he said.
