Takeaway containers on the chopping block in next plastics ban

TAKEAWAY containers and plastic bags could soon be banned in the ACT as the government continues to phase out single-use plastics.

City Services Minister Chris Steel.

City Services Minister Chris Steel said the government will seek feedback from businesses on the proposal to axe a third tranche of plastic items from July next year.

These items include:

  • Boutique or heavyweight plastic bags (greater than 35 microns thick)
  • Single-use plastic takeaway containers
  • Single-use plastic plates and bowls
  • Plastic microbeads in rinse-off personal care, cosmetic and cleaning products

The ACT government has already banned single-use plastic cutlery, drink stirrers, expanded polystyrene food and beverage containers, plastic straws, cotton buds with plastic sticks and all oxo-degradable plastics.

This week Coles also began an Australia-first trial that removes plastic fruit and veggie produce bags from all 12 of their Canberra stores.

Steel said the government will also soon be releasing a draft “Circular Economy Strategy”.

“The strategy will consider how we create and support new jobs, better manage problematic waste streams and design supply chains to stop waste streams from emerging in the first place,” he said.

Re takeaway food containers, we clean and reuse any so-called “single use” plastic containers we get.
However back in the ‘60s I remember my parents taking our own containers (usually a saucepan or two) to the local Chinese restaurant for takeaway. The other option used by restaurants was a square cardboard cakebox lined with foil. Spring Rolls and dim sims were always just in a paper bag, as they often are now. This could be easily done again, though no doubt our more litigious modern society will find a reason to not do this.

Wow, forget about the child deaths in hospital, the waiting lists for surgery, the number off people waiting for public housing and the number of homeless people sleeping on the streets – let’s get rid of single use plastics! What a fantastic use of geenslabor time and energy!

As G Hollands so aptly puts it in simple terms even the Greenslabor bagage should be able to understand, there are more important matters to which our “government” should attend rather than disturbing the takeaway industry, especially in these uncertain times, and their customers. Those tactics are just sooooo uncool, and hopefully a wakeup call for voters.
