Ghosts of Christmas past in ‘A Christmas Carol’

Shake & Stir Theatre Co’s “A Christmas Carol”.

Arts editor HELEN MUSA wraps up the year with this last “Artsweek” column and there’s still a lot to see and do around town.

SHAKE & Stir Theatre Co’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” complete with live music, yuletide carolling, innovative video design, lavish costumes and holographic ghosts of Christmas past. Canberra Theatre, December 19–24.

QL2 Dance, “On course,” QL2 Studios, Gorman Arts Centre, December 16-17.

“CREATIVES-In-The-Park,” presented by You Are Here with support from Tuggeranong Arts, will this year be held in Eddison Park, Woden, December 16. All welcome.

A State Memorial for Australian entertainer Barry Humphries will be held at the Sydney Opera House on December 15.

LUCID Theatre Co’s debut production, “People You May Know”, explores the current and critical concerns of young people today – friendships, sex, and, most importantly, the internet. The Courtyard Studio, December 14-16.

THE final film in “A Very NFSA Christmas”, the National Film and Sound Archive is screening “Die Hard 2”, starring Bruce Willis, December 14. Then in “Prom Night at the NFSA”, the courtyard will be transformed into a quintessential American prom night, complete with balloons, refreshments and music, December 16 before a screening of horror cult classic “Carrie”.

  • FRESH from the success of its first tour to the US, the Australian Haydn Ensemble will perform Haydn’s “Morning”, “Noon” and “Night” symphonies at Albert Hall, December 14.
  • THE Australian Voices celebrates its 30th anniversary at the Australian Centre for Christianity & Culture, Barton, December 16.
  • LLEWELLYN Choir is holding a family evening of Christmas music featuring Australian carols, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasia on Christmas Carols”, Gustav Holst’s “Christmas Day” and more. Griffith Community Hall, December 16.
  • BEN Drysdale’s launch gig for his debut solo single “If I Don’t Lie Down” will be at the Canberra Irish Club. December 17, free entry.
  • Luminescence + Canberra International Music Festival + Wesleypresent: “Christmas Classics”, December 15; “Christmas Pipes and Navidad: Christmas in Spain”, December 16 and “Christmas Classics” (repeat) December 17. All at Wesley Music Centre,
  • ST Paul’s Choir and Igitur Nos present “Festival of Lessons and Carols”, St Paul’s, Manuka, December 17.
